"THE $1000 CHALLENGE"

This is my own story explaining how I was offered $1,000 to lose the excess pounds. I initially failed, but eventually found something that helped me do it.

Hi! My name is Donn Jassura. I helped Steve put this site together to show people that it's not impossible to lose any amount of the excess pounds that you want! I hope you find this site useful.

I'm married, with 2 boys ages 14 and 12. I was born in Georgia, have lived in Hamburg, NY which is south of Buffalo and today live in Hyde Park near the Catskills. Someday, I hope to move to the western USA or Canada. My hobbies are computers, commodities, cars and well, I guess now, health!

I was getting bigger every year. My scale had hit 234 pounds at age 38. For my height and build, I should have weighed about 175 pounds. That was 59 pounds over where I should have been, clinically obese. My parents were concerned that my sisters and I were all over the charts, and growing larger despite roller coaster diet/weight loss. Every time I lost, I gained even more back. We figured it was a gene problem since my mom and dad each had one side of their family who were mostly overweight.

THEN CAME THE CHALLENGE. They told each of us that if we lost the pounds and got down to our normal levels, they would give us $1,000. No time limits, no race, we all had the same offer. We could each collect the $1,000. BUT, if we did collect the money, we had to keep the it off, or give the money back! My parents were not cheap, just smart and very concerned.

I tried harder than ever to lose the the excess pounds, but COULD NOT DO IT!! I lost about ten pounds, but stumbled. I had lost some before, but this time it was harder than ever, perhaps because of my getting older. I got on that dreaded exercise bike, ate "right," was always hungry, and seemed to "hit a wall". I eventually binged because I was feeling dizzy, tired, and depressed. It seemed my metabolism froze, and I was going to stay at this level forever. I wanted that money, but even more I wanted to look better and be healthy. I was very depressed and disappointed. I tried different programs on and off for 7 months, but got nowhere. The pounds kept returning.

I started off nice and easy. I took the juice every morning, it seemed to help me "wake up" in the morning. You only have to take a capful, mixed with a little water. I was hitting the snooze alarm less. I had more energy during the day, and slept better at night.

I didn't take the shakes right away. They sat in the closet for a few weeks. Funny, even after all the tons of positive reports I had read, the thought of shakes just reminded me of how lousy I felt while on Slim Fast. It never tasted very good to me, and I was always hungry. So it was natural for me to not want to jump right in. In addition, I think we have all experienced difficulty in actually "turning on the switch" and officially starting a program. You're afraid that you will never get to eat good food again. Not a happy picture. However, if I knew then, what I know today, I would have had the first shake down the hatch before the UPS guy left the driveway.

After taking the juice for about a month, I really noticed a difference. The more I took it, the better I felt. I was staying up later, but was more refreshed in the morning. I finally decided to go on the shakes. I usually replaced one or two meals a day with a shake. I was surprised at how good they tasted just mixing with water and ice, and how they filled me up. When I replaced lunch (at work) with the shakes, something happened. Since I drank a shake in about 5 minutes, I had some extra lunch time on my hands, I had more energy, wanted to do "something". So, I stopped by a friend at work (Ray), who wanted to lose the excess pounds as well. I asked him if he wanted to go for a walk. Ray said, "Sure, I wanted to smoke a stinker anyway!"

And off we went. We went for walks at lunch as often as we could, about 1/2 hour. I guess I should have only walked 10 minutes or so the first day and add a minute each day, to build up slowly. But I had the energy, and wanted to move. It felt good. And it didn't feel like I was exercising, I hate exercise. For me it's boring and too strenuous. Speaking of which, it has been written that strenuous exercise is not too good for losing the excess pounds. You wind up burning off sugar instead of fat. If you are going to exercise while trying to lose pounds, exercise moderately.

On those days that I had a shake for lunch, Ray and I would try to hook up and walk. We would go out about 3 days a week, usually 1/2 hour. The walk is great for just unwinding in the middle of the work day. And I'm sure it helped the adaptogens to build my long muscles, which help burn fat. If you work at a job where you don't perform physical work, you really need to move around a little. As we get older and less physical, our muscles start to disappear. The less we move, the faster they go. Then things start tearing and breaking. We have to find ways to keep our body young and limber.

I kept on the shakes. I really like them for breakfast. On the other programs, I would try to skip breakfast. Bad news. I later read that much of the aging process happens between the time you wake up, and the time you get your first nourishment. Plus, when I skipped breakfast and dumped a large coffee on an empty stomach, I got stomach aches. Then I would have to eat something to relieve the ache. I also think that I don't get much nourishment from a bagel, where the shakes give you what your body needs. Each shake gives you 50% of the daily required vitamins, minerals, protein, and the adaptogens that you can't get anywhere else. I drink it before the coffee, and not once have I had that old stomach ache. Also, I drink the coffee slower because it feels like I'm drinking on a full stomach. It's pretty satisfying. On any reduction program, if you don't drink a lot of water, it will take you much longer to lose the the excess pounds.

Some people who have a fluid retention problem will refuse to drink any water. The fact is, one reason they are holding water may be that they aren't drinking enough of it. When the body gets less water, it perceives it as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop. So water is then stored in extra-cellular spaces, and shows up as swollen feet, legs and hands. The fix for fluid retention is to drink your 6-8 glasses per day. Your body will adjust back to normal. This is the same problem as not getting enough nutrition on a diet/weight loss program (less calories, skipping meals). Your body puts in it's starvation defenses, lowers your metabolism, and holds on to fat.

Drinking proper amounts of water also relieves constipation, reduces colitis pain, eliminates false appendicitis pain, improves arthritis pain, and eliminates headaches. This is all documented in books written by doctors. When Ray went on the water kick, his headaches went away. He also got rid of a rash. Proper water intake will also reduce low back pain, and neck pain. Did you know that water is held in the discs in your back, and supports the compression of the upper body? Seventy five percent of the upper bodyweight is supported in the water in the disc core. Think about that one for a minute.

As for the shakes, I used to take one or two per day to replace meals. I wasn't starving, either. One interesting thing I noticed is that the more shakes you have in a row, the less you feel like eating regular food. This was a very different experience compared to other diet/weight loss programs. One day, I had a shake for breakfast, and one for lunch. Because my wife wasn't home, there was no planned dinner. I took out another shake for dinner. I was a little hungry when I first walked in for dinner (as usual), but as soon as I started drinking that shake, the urge to eat went away. When I was having 2 shakes a day, (eating only once), I filled up on regular food a lot quicker. I guess my stomach began to shrink, and I wasn't able to eat as much. This was a very positive thing. The only disadvantage is that you won't get your "money's worth" at those buffets.

Which brings me to another interesting point -- on several occasions during the "diet/weight loss" period, I went on a party binge with no guilt. Deliberately. Kind of an experiment, if you will. Look, you have to live. On Memorial day, I went to Buffalo to visit my sister (Tracy) and brother in law (Randy). When we get together, we celebrate. We had a campfire for 4 days, and I ate and drank a lot.

At first, I couldn't eat much. I got full quickly as I mentioned earlier. But as I kept expanding my stomach, I could fit more. I gained "several" pounds in 4 days. Back to the shakes on Tuesday, and it came off in about 3 days. On the 4th of July, we were together again for 6 days, and I gained even more. I almost hit the $1000 target just before the holiday. But I knew I could take the the excess pounds off with no problem, I wasn't rushing anyway. I never try to lose on holidays and vacations, but I did lose those extra pounds in 4 days after returning home.

Understand, on these events, I ate and drank more than I typically would have when I was overweight. That's because I was thinner and had no guilt, and was really testing myself a little bit. Could I stop after the holiday? Yes. I am not recommending this kind of "bingeing", but I did prove that I could take the pounds right off after the "test". It's funny too, I think it drives people nuts when they see how much I can eat when I'm on the "Conquest Program"!! Ha, it's all balance. Now I finally have control. I know I can go back on the shakes to get back to where I want to be.

I was going to restaurants every weekend while on Prime Perfect Topp Fast. Or it seemed there was always a party, picnic, or wedding to go to. You see, everything in life is balance. If you have a desk job, and go home at night and watch TV or sit at a computer, you better be eating very little. A construction worker can eat about 3 times as much as a desk job person, because they burn up the calories. I also read that if you are watching TV, your metabolism actually slows down to a slower state than sitting in a chair doing nothing. Add to that a big bag of chips while watching the tube, and you know what happens (My son takes shakes sometimes too).

The problem is those little "hunger" signals that hit all of us, all day long. And if you eat a low calorie program, the hunger signals cry out. That's why most programs don't work. It's kind of embarrassing receiving all of the compliments about how "great I look" now. It's even more embarrassing to mention it. But they keep coming. One compliment I got was from someone who was on her own diet/weight loss program, had lost 8 pounds before a wedding, but gained it back. She kept complimenting me on how great I was looking (and I haven't yet told her how I did it). Recently she told me, "Donn, you really look great, you look like a young boy." I said, "WHAT?"
